Senior Maddie Mauch recently reflected on experiences that shaped her personally and professionally over the past year. Rock Chalk, Maddie!

I finished my first year of nursing school on a strong note, and I am incredibly fortunate to be surrounded by such knowledgeable faculty, supportive classmates and inspiring healthcare professionals. Throughout this past year, I have gained not only valuable classroom knowledge but also confidence through hands-on clinical experiences.

Last October, I began my first clinical rotation on the Surgical/Trauma Progressive Care Unit at The University of Kansas Health System, where I learned how to care for critically ill and post-surgical patients. During this time, I was also promoted from a Patient Care Technician to a Nursing Associate at The University of Kansas Health System, allowing me to expand my clinical skills through experiences such as IV insertions, lab draws, Foley catheter insertions, straight catheterizations, central line dressing changes and other direct patient care responsibilities.

In January, I completed my second clinical rotation on the Medical Telemetry Unit at The University of Kansas Health System, where I continued to strengthen my medication administration skills, clinical judgment and confidence in caring for diverse patient populations.

In May, I had the opportunity to observe the Operating Room, where I gained insight into how the surgical environment differs from inpatient nursing units. I followed patients through their preoperative and postoperative care. I learned the importance of collaboration, precision and continuity of care that takes place throughout the surgical experience.

This summer, I have continued working as a Nursing Associate, floating to a variety of inpatient units including the ICU, Emergency Department, Medical-Surgical, Renal, Orthopedic, Cardiac and Progressive Care unit. Each unit has challenged me in new ways and has allowed me to learn from exceptional nurses, providers and interdisciplinary teams who continue to inspire my growth.

As I begin my senior year, I am excited to continue developing my clinical skills, expanding my knowledge, and embracing every opportunity to learn. I am incredibly grateful to be part of such an outstanding nursing program and to work alongside healthcare professionals who have invested in my journey.
