Requirements, Eligibility & How to Apply to the CVM SRTP
Requirements
PLEASE NOTE:
This opportunity is only available to 1st year KU School of Medicine students. Non-KU Medical Center students are not allowed to participate in the program.
- Student – Submit completed proposal/application forms – incomplete forms will not be considered.
- Student – At the end of the research activity, each student must submit a written scientific, 250-word Abstract of the research project in the following timeframe:
- Abstract is due at the end of summer by the date announced by Research Coordinator,
- A revision of the Abstract is possible before submitting a final version on-line in the format and by the deadline set/announced by the Planning Committee of the next Annual Student Research Forum (SRF).
- Student – Make an oral presentation (with PowerPoint) or poster presentation of the research at the next SRF; rarely, an exception/extension to the next year might be approved by the Research Coordinator.
- Mentor – Completes the “IDSP-800 Evaluation of Student Performance” at the end of the program period and submits it to the Research Coordinator (Evaluation includes the grade recommendation).
- Final Grade will be issued to the Registrar after ALL requirements have been met. A grade of “I” (Incomplete) will be issued automatically at the end of the summer session and before requirement
Procedures
- Program director interviews the student to discuss their background, interests and goals, and connects them with a suitable faculty mentor.
- Student contacts the Mentor regarding availability/feasibility for Summer Research.
- Mentor & Student complete their information in the appropriate form:
- “2 IDSP-800 Summer Research Training Elective Proposal” – for non-scholarship funded research proposal.
- “Summer Research Training Program Scholarship Application” - for scholarship research proposal.
- Mentor or Student submits Proposal/Application to Research Coordinator for action: review/discussion, possible revision, and approval for funding and/or recommendation for enrollment.
- If the research is proposed for an international site, then the Student must meet with the International Coordinator, too.
- Student is notified of the outcome on the Proposal and follows instructions from the Enrollment Coordinator.
Eligibility
- First year KU medical student from any campus
Compensation
In past years in which gifts from donors were received, some students received a monetary gift during the fall following the completion of the summer program. However, please note that there is no guaranteed stipend for participation in the cardiovascular summer research training program.
How to Apply
Interested KU Medical Center students should:
- Complete the CVM SRTP Application Form - Summer 2026 (application window is currently closed). The Summer 2027 application will be made available in the fall of 2026.
- The application requires an up-to-date curriculum vitae (CV) that outlines education experience in research and other professional educational activities to be uploaded.
We will arrange a short interview to:
- Review the student’s CV
- Evaluate the level of participation in previous research experience
- Elicit particular areas of research interest
- Assess level of commitment the student can provide
- Address questions from the student
- Connect the applicant to potential mentor
Deadline
- Deadline is end of January of MS1 year
- It is advisable to contact us as soon as possible so we have adequate time to identify a suitable mentor and plan an appropriate research project
