Mission
To provide KU School of Medicine students transitioning from MS1 to MS2 an opportunity to partake in clinically oriented research in Cardiovascular Medicine under mentorship from KU Medical Center faculty, provide exposure to cardiology and scientific research, and boost interest in pursuing a career in academic cardiology.
Program Highlights
- 8-week summer research fellowship
- One-on-one mentorship from a Cardiology faculty mentor
- Work with the faculty to develop a research proposal and design
- Participate in data collection and analysis
- Expectation to present findings at a scientific meeting
- Opportunity to publish in peer-reviewed journal
- Qualifies for up to 2-4 elective credit hours
Objectives
- The objective is to participate in virtually all aspects of a clinically oriented research project with the guidance of a faculty research mentor.
- By the end of the experience, the student will be able to:
- Better understand the overall process of biomedical research by first-hand experience
- Enhance skills to analytically read and interpret biomedical literature in the field of study
- Enhance the ability to apply scientific reasoning to the problem-solving process
- Understand why the research is being done relative to the current status of the field
- Assist in the design of a project
- Carry out a project with some degree of independence
- Analyze the results
- Present the findings of the research in both written format of an abstract and an oral or poster presentation
