Lead Poisoning Prevention Toolkit

Danger, lead hazard tape in front of person in hazmat suit scraping the side of a structureFunded by the National Center for Healthy Housing’s 2023 Lead Poisoning Prevention Mini-Grant: Increasing Rural Community Capacity for Lead Poisoning Prevention

This toolkit provides an accessible overview of lead exposure risks, related health effects and practical, evidence-based strategies to prevent childhood lead poisoning.

It was informed by a multi-state policy mapping analysis that compared lead prevention policies, such as disclosure and testing laws, across seven states with similar characteristics to Kansas.

The aim: to identify effective, well-implemented policies that could help guide action in Kansas communities.

Developed through a collaborative, iterative process, the toolkit incorporates input from national experts, including the National Center for Healthy Housing, and is currently under review by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.

It features:

  • Local and state policy examples
  • Implementation guidance
  • Community education and outreach resources

We worked closely with Local Health Equity Action Teams (LHEATs) from rural southeast Kansas, specifically in Bourbon, Crawford, Labette and Montgomery counties, to adapt the toolkit based on local priorities and resources. Their input ensured the recommendations are not only relevant but also scalable to other rural communities.
