Goals and Benefit of Global Education

Global health education and research build the knowledge, skills and perspectives needed to address health challenges in an increasingly interconnected world. It builds an understanding of how health is shaped by social, economic, political and environmental factors across countries and communities. It exposes students to interdisciplinary methods and complex real-world health challenges. Together, these experiences prepare students for a wide range of careers and equip them to address health inequities both locally and globally.

Understanding cultural contexts

Cultural understanding is the foundation to effective, ethical and sustainable global health work. Health behaviors, beliefs and systems are deeply shaped by culture. Understanding the cultural context in which global health work is implemented is essential to improve acceptability and uptake, build trust and ethical engagement, support sustainability and local ownership and ultimately to more effectively address health inequities. Learners looking to engage in global health work are encouraged to become familiar with the cultural contexts in which they are engaging. They can do so in several ways:
