THE COMPASSION AWARD
The Compassion Award was established in 2017 to recognize a student who practices the art of compassion by being present to the pain and suffering of their patients, families and fellow staff. The recipient is selected with the help of the MS and DNP faculty.
SUSAN C. DAY NURSING AWARD
The Susan C. Day Nursing Award was established in memory of Ms. Day, who graduated from the School of Nursing in 1971 With Highest Distinction and was inducted into Sigma Theta Tau International, the world’s only honor society for nursing. Ms. Day achieved this level of accomplishment after being severely burned in an accident at age 14. She was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1994, which led to her untimely death in 1998. This award recognizes an outstanding graduate of the Bachelor of Science in nursing program at graduation. This student must be in the top 3% of the class, thereby graduating with highest distinction, the top category for graduating seniors at KU. In addition to outstanding academic merit, the recipient has demonstrated strong leadership within the school.
SOUSA AWARD
The Sousa Award was established by Randall Darnell in 2012 in memory of Dr. Valmi Delfino de Sousa. This award recognizes a nursing Ph.D. student who is nearing the completion of their dissertation research. The dissertation research should be in the field of diabetes or other area of nursing research, and the person needs to demonstrate vision, innovation and leadership throughout their doctoral studies.
COLLEEN P. KOSIAK GRADUATE STUDENT CLINICAL EXCELLENCE AWARD
The Graduate Student Clinical Excellence Award was established by the Faculty Practice Committee in 2005 and was named in memory of Colleen P. Kosiak in 2006. Ms. Kosiak earned her Master of Science in the Family Nurse Practitioner track from the KU School of Nursing in 1997 and was posthumously awarded a Ph.D. in nursing in 2006. The award bearing Ms. Kosiak’s name celebrates an outstanding graduate nursing student for clinical expertise in providing holistic patient care and is consistent with her beliefs about demonstration of leadership in advanced clinical practice.
DEAN’S AWARD
The Dean’s Award was established in 1981 to recognize a graduating senior who has provided outstanding service to the School of Nursing.
OUTSTANDING SENIOR AWARD
The Outstanding Senior Award is given to an undergraduate student with outstanding scholastic achievement.
JEANNE QUESENBURY AWARD
The Jeanne Quesenbury Award was established in 2003 as directed by Ms. Quesenbury’s estate. Jeanne Holman Quesenbury earned her Bachelor of Science in nursing from the University of Kansas and was a faculty member at the KU School of Nursing from 1955 until her retirement in 1972. Because she was well-known for her expertise in clinical practice and the high standards for patient care that she set for students, the criteria for the award states that it will be given to a graduating BSN student who demonstrates excellent clinical skills. The undergraduate students and faculty members help select the recipient each year.
REGISTERED NURSE AWARD
The Registered Nurse Award is given each year to a student who has completed the RN-to-Bachelor of Science in nursing completion program with outstanding academic achievement and commitment to professional growth. The RN-to-BSN students and faculty members help select the recipient each year.
KAY SCHLICHTER AWARD
The Kay Schlichter Award was established in memory of Katherine Ann “Kay” Schlichter. Ms. Schlichter was president of her class and died two weeks prior to her graduation in 1957. The award was started by her classmates, who voted to leave the award rather than a traditional class gift. The award is given to a graduating senior with outstanding academic achievement who has demonstrated leadership ability. The undergraduate students and faculty members help select the recipient each year.
I.L. HIRSCH NURSING AWARD
Irma Lou Kolterman Hirsch, a leader in the profession of nursing, received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Kansas in 1957. She started her nursing career on the faculty of the Bethany Hospital RN program. She later earned an MSN from the University of Washington in Seattle and became a member of the faculty at Duke University in North Carolina. She has worked in administrative posts at the University of Kansas Medical Center, assisted in the development of the Nursing Program for UMKC and served in a policy development role of the American Nurses Association when it was located in Kansas City, Missouri. Originally from Washington, Kansas, Mrs. Hirsch created this award to recognize an outstanding student who has accepted employment in a rural setting.
E. JEAN M. HILL AWARD
The E. Jean M. Hill Award was established in honor of Jean Hill, director of nursing education at the KU Medical Center from 1949 to 1963. This award is given in recognition of a graduating senior nursing student who has demonstrated outstanding clinical performance.
MELISSA L. HARDIN AWARD
Created by the friends and family of Melissa Hardin in appreciation of the compassionate nursing care she received, this award honors a graduating student pursuing a career in cardiac nursing. Born with a heart defect, Melissa had her first surgery at The University of Kansas Health System at just 23 months old. There would be complications and hospital stays into her adulthood, but Melissa did not let her lifelong health issues hold her back from a full and happy life. Throughout her journey, she and her family received caring medical and emotional support from their nurses.
RUTH O. MCKIBBEN ALUMNI RESEARCH AWARD
This award was established in 2010 by the KU Nurses Alumni Association to recognize a doctoral nursing student who has demonstrated outstanding performance in the areas of scholarship and leadership.
SIGMA THETA TAU, DELTA CHAPTER AWARDS

ACADEMIC REGALIA
The academic dress worn by participants signifies the wearer’s academic discipline and degree-granting institution. The American Council on Education’s Academic Costume Code specifies the details of academic regalia for member institutions, including the colors and styles of caps and tassels, gowns and hoods.
The colors of tassels worn by the graduates on their caps identify their academic disciplines. Mortarboards are worn by recipients of bachelor’s and master’s degrees, while the wide variety of cap styles worn by doctoral degree recipients are in keeping with traditions of the graduating institution.
Gown styles also symbolize the level of academic achievement.
The bachelor’s degree gown has pointed sleeves and is worn closed. The master’s gown has longer, square-cut sleeves, and the doctoral gown has bell-shaped sleeves trimmed with velvet chevrons. Master’s and doctoral gowns may be worn open or closed. The style, trimming and color of doctoral gowns vary according to institutional traditions.
Recipients of doctoral and master’s degrees may also wear hoods that signify their high academic attainment. The lining of each hood carries the university colors — crimson and blue for the University of Kansas. The velvet edging on each hood (and on the sleeves of the gown) signifies by its color the degree earned. Dark blue signifies doctor of philosophy; doctor of nursing practice, apricot.
HONORING OUR MILITARY VETERANS
The University of Kansas and KU Medical Center recognize those who serve or have honorably served in the U.S. Armed Forces. The veteran honorees are wearing red, white and blue Military and Veteran Honor Cords.
