University of Kansas School of Medicine

Class of 2025
Recognition and Hooding Ceremony
Saturday, May 17, 2025

Dean's Message

Dear Graduates,

On behalf of the faculty and staff at the University of Kansas School of Medicine, I offer my
sincere congratulations to all our graduates on successfully completing this pivotal phase of
your professional education. The hooding and recognition ceremony today represents the
end of a chapter in your chosen health care field and the beginning of another, full of promise
and possibilities. As you celebrate this occasion, I hope you also reflect on the richness of the
experiences and knowledge that you have gained and the enduring friendships that you have
forged along the way.

We are honored to celebrate 198 M.D. degree candidates from our three campuses in Kansas
City, Salina and Wichita, as well as 109 master’s and Ph.D. degree candidates.

Since our founding in 1905, providing our students with state-of-the-art health sciences
education has been at the core of our mission, and we carry that tradition forward. Our faculty,
staff and students take great pride in the fact that the KU School of Medicine offers innovative
degree programs that optimally prepare future physicians, scientists, researchers, educators
and leaders to make a meaningful impact as they ultimately improve the health of those they
serve.

As you embark on your careers in health and science, I know you will use your exceptional
skills to enrich the lives of your fellow human beings. However, you need to invest time and
energy outside the typical duties of your profession. You must embrace the opportunity to
give back to your community through leadership and service. I am confident that you will find
new and impressive ways to make a difference and change our world for the better.
Congratulations and best wishes for your continued success.

Oath of Hippocrates

The Doctor’s Oath has been a part of the physician’s legacy since the days of Hippocrates, c. 400 B.C. There are those who see this solemn affirmation as a priceless symbol of professional heritage not possessed by any other similar group — an exhortation to moral and ethical perfection; but since knowledge and character cannot be separated in the physician, the pledge is also a prayer for intellectual attainment and proficiency in the art. It is a vow freely promised by the physician, proud of their birthright, to embrace the concept of self-discipline for the public good as a characteristic inseparable from the remainder of his professional philosophy.

Upon this day of graduation from the University of Kansas School of Medicine as I seek admission to the medical profession: I do solemnly affirm, as did the ancient Greeks, by all that I hold most sacred that according to my ability and judgment, I will keep this oath and its stipulations.

To hold my teachers in this art equal to my own parents and extend to them the respect and gratitude which is their due.

I will by precept, lecture, and every other mode of instruction, impart a knowledge of the art to students, and to disciples bound by covenant and oath according to the law of medicine.

I will follow the system of treatment which, according to my ability and judgment, I consider for the benefit of my patients and abstain from whatever is deleterious and mischievous.

I will exercise my art solely for the cure of my patients and the prevention of disease, and will give no drugs and perform no operations for a criminal purpose nor far less suggest such thing.

With honor and dignity I will practice my profession, not permitting consideration of religion, nationality, color, gender or social or economic standing to intervene between duty and my patient.

Into whatever houses I will enter, I will go for the benefit of the sick and will abstain from every voluntary act of wrongdoing or corruption.

Whatever I may see or hear in the lives of men and women which ought not be spoken abroad, I will not divulge, reckoning that such should be kept secret.

While I continue to keep this oath unviolated, may it be granted to me to enjoy life and the practice of the art, respected by all humanity in all times. But should I trespass and violate this oath, may the reverse be my lot.

Mahlon H. Delp, M.D.
Chair, Department of Medicine (1960-1969)

ABOUT SOLDIERS AND SAILORS MEMORIAL HALL

The Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall was built in 1925 as a tribute to Wyandotte County soldiers killed in World War I and was rededicated to those who died in subsequent wars. The front portico, which is classical in design, consists of six three-story stone columns. In keeping with the Tuscan order, the entablature above the columns is plain with an unornamented frieze. The rest of the exterior reflects a more Georgian style, emphasized by several eight-over-eight double hung windows. Behind the entry columns, five double doors capped with stone cartouches containing bullseye windows lead into the lobby, which was originally called Memorial Hall. A wainscot of Carthage marble runs around the room, supporting 12 engaged Corinthian columns and four corner piers finished in plaster. The two large chandeliers are made of bronze, and the ceiling lights in the gallery are milk glass globes carved or painted with classical decorations.

ACADEMIC REGALIA

The academic dress worn by participants signifies the wearer’s academic discipline and degree-granting institution. The American Council on Education’s Academic Costume Code specifies the details of academic regalia for member institutions, including the colors and styles of caps and tassels, gowns and hoods.

The color of velvet edging of the hood and gown indicates the degree; in the lining of the hood are the college colors of the institution that confers the degree – crimson and blue for the University of Kansas.

The hood of the doctor of medicine degree has a green velvet edging; doctor of philosophy degree, blue; doctor of science degree, golden yellow. The hood of the master of health services administration and master of public health is salmon colored. The master of science in biostatistics and master of science in clinical research hood is gold.

Gown styles also symbolize the level of academic achievement. The bachelor’s degree gown has pointed sleeves and is worn closed. The master’s gown has longer, square-cut sleeves, and the doctoral gown has bell-shaped sleeves trimmed with velvet chevrons. Master’s and doctoral gowns may be worn open or closed. The style, trimming and color of doctoral gowns vary according to institutional traditions.
