Zachary Sebo, PhD

Professional Background

Dr. Sebo is an Assistant Professor of Geriatric Medicine and a member of the Landon Center on Aging at the University of Kansas Medical Center. He earned his PhD from Yale before completing postdoctoral training in mitochondrial biology with Navdeep Chandel, PhD at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.

His laboratory focuses on how mitochondria regulate intestinal function and whole-body physiology. His scientific training was supported by an NSF Graduate Research Fellowship and a Glenn Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship in Aging Research. A Kansas City native, Dr. Sebo is pleased to return to the region and contribute to its scientific community.

Research

Overview

The Sebo lab investigates how mitochondria control local tissue function and whole-body physiology. We combine genetically engineered mouse models with functional genomics, isotope tracing, and bioinformatics to study how mitochondria control health and disease.

Our current work focuses on the intestine, where mitochondria perform functions beyond energy production, including citrulline synthesis and the detoxification of microbially produced hydrogen sulfide. We aim to define how these pathways mediate communication between organs and contribute to metabolic, gastrointestinal, and age-related diseases.
