Professional Background

Wei Zhang, MD, PhD, FCAP, is a board-certified AP/CP-trained pathologist, who serves as the Medical Director of Molecular Pathology (Solid Tumor) at the University of Kansas Medical Center (KUMC). Dr. Zhang holds the academic title of Associate Professor in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of Kansas School of Medicine. She completed her doctoral training in Japan, followed by residency in pathology, and subspecialty fellowship training in gastrointestinal and liver pathology in Motefiore Medical Center and molecular genetic pathology in Mount Sinai Health System in New York. Dr. Zhang's clinical expertise encompasses gastrointestinal and hepatopathology, solid tumor molecular diagnostics, and precision biomarker testing. In addition to her diagnostic responsibilities, she serves as Chair of the Precision Medicine Conference at KUMC, and is an active member of the College of American Pathologists Personalized Health Care Committee and the Association for Molecular Pathology Economic Affairs Committee. She is actively engaged in clinical research, medical education, and national and international scientific presentations, with a focus on advancing precision oncology and molecular pathology practice.

Research

Overview

Dr. Zhang is actively engaged in the diagnostic surgical and molecular genetic pathology service and has special clinical interests in solid tumor genetics. Dr. Zhang's major research interests focus on the pathogenesis and treatment of liver, colorectal, and anal cancers. She is also interested in biomarker discovery and development of new molecular diagnostic assays.
