Tresza D. Hutcheson, Ph.D., M.A., NCNTT

Professional Background

Tresza Hutcheson, PhD, NCNTT, is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Population Health at the University of Kansas School of Medicine and Service Director of the Tobacco Treatment Program and the Genetic Services for Health Equity Clinic at the University of Kansas Cancer Center. She is a nationally certified tobacco treatment specialist and helped found the University of Kansas Tobacco Treatment Specialist Training.

Dr. Hutcheson received her training in Clinical-Health Psychology from the University of Kansas, at which time she began specializing in tobacco prevention and treatment. Her more than 25-year career has included providing outreach and treatment to under-resourced and minoritized populations; providing clinical supervision, training, protocol development, and fidelity monitoring for large clinical trials; conducting quality improvement initiatives at the University of Kansas Cancer Center and the University of Kansas Medical Center; serving nationally as an expert in quality improvement and implementation methods for tobacco treatment within cancer care; and serving locally through community-based partnerships.

Dr. Hutcheson has a strong commitment to promoting health equity. Having grown up in a rural area, she has a particular interest in improving access to specialized healthcare services for under-resourced populations. In 2020, she joined the JUNTOS Center for Advancing Latino Health, where she works on multiple cross-disciplinary projects and serves as the center’s data analyst. She also leads a youth-focused tobacco prevention program in partnership with the Unified Government of Wyandotte County Health Department.

Overview

Dr. Hutcheson is an implementation science and health services researcher who examines how evidence-based care can be more effectively and equitably delivered within healthcare systems. She has expertise in quality improvement, program evaluation, and qualitative research methods. Her clinical and research interests include interventions that promote healthy lifestyle change for disease management, mental health treatment, pain management, and quality of life improvement.
