Dr. Thomas J. Serena, DO, MA, RPVI, is an Assistant Professor of Vascular Surgery with the Division of Vascular Surgery at the University of Kansas Medical Center. He specializes in the comprehensive management of arterial and venous disease, with particular interest in aortic pathology, thoracic outlet syndrome, and advanced endovascular interventions.
Originally from Chicago, Illinois, Dr. Serena graduated Summa Cum Laude from Loyola University Chicago before earning both his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree and a Master of Arts in Biomedical Ethics from Kansas City University. He completed his General Surgery residency at Beaumont Health/Michigan State University and subsequently completed fellowship training in Vascular Surgery at the University of Utah Health. He is certified as a Registered Physician in Vascular Interpretation (RPVI) and successfully completed the American Board of Surgery Vascular Surgery Examinations.
Dr. Serena treats the full spectrum of vascular disease, including aortic aneurysms, aortoiliac occlusive disease, carotid artery disease, peripheral arterial disease, thoracic outlet syndrome, and dialysis access disorders. His clinical interests include both open surgical and minimally invasive endovascular approaches, allowing him to tailor treatment plans to each patient’s unique anatomy and goals.

In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Serena is actively involved in vascular surgery research, surgical education, and mentorship. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and book chapters, including contributions to Rutherford’s Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Therapy, and serves as a reviewer for both the Journal of Vascular Surgery and the Journal of Surgical Education. His academic interests include vascular surgery education, competency-based training, complex aortic disease, and outcomes research.
