Stephen R. Eaton, M.D., F.A.C.S.

Professional Background

Dr. Stephen Eaton, MD, FACS, is an Associate Professor of Surgery in the Trauma/Critical and Acute Care Surgery Division at the University of Kansas Medical Center. Dr. Eaton attended college in his home state at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale and received a bachelor's in biological sciences. He then went on to pursue a master’s from Southern Illinois in Physiology. While he knew that medical school was in his future, Dr. Eaton first worked as a research assistant for Southern Illinois at the Springfield, Illinois campus for a year. He then attended medical school at Ross University in Dominica.
After medical school, Dr. Eaton completed a preliminary surgery year at Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia. He stayed on as a categorical resident and completed residency there. While in residency, it became clear that he wanted to pursue a career in Trauma and Critical Care Surgery. He completed a fellowship in Surgical Critical Care at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. He then went on to complete a second-year fellowship there in Acute Care Surgery. He stayed on as Assistant Professor of Surgery at Washington University in the Section of Acute and Critical Care Surgery for the next six years. Dr. Eaton joined the Division of Trauma, Surgical Critical Care, and Acute Care Surgery at KU in September 2019.
Dr. Eaton holds an interest in caring for complex trauma and emergency general surgery patients. Dr. Eaton also has a special interest in wound care, and he is passionate about medical student, resident, and fellow education. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and a member of several surgical societies, including the Surgical Infection Society, Association for Academic Surgeons, Eastern Association for Surgery of Trauma, and the Society of Critical Care Medicine.
