rholland3@kumc.eduProfessional Background
I started my professional medical career as a Paramedic from the years 1977-19884. I eventually attended the University of Kansas Medical School and then completed a residency in Family Medicine in 1999. I worked in family medicine in Grand Rapids, Michigan for a few years, and then gravitated to emergency medicine. I worked as an emergency medicine physician for the next 20 years. During that time, I also completed a residency in Emergency Medicine (2010-2013.) During that time, I also become very active in provider wellness and was trained through Stanford to be a system chief wellness officer. Subsequently, I was hired by my ER group to become the chief wellness officer for our group. That position lasted 5 years. during that time, we developed multiple programs focused on our provider's wellness and wellbeing. We developed a sabbatical program that was fully funded and worked to deepen the sense of community within the group as well as between our group and the many departments that we worked with. In 2021, I moved to Kansas City and then completed a fellowship in Hospice and Palliative Medicine. I am now employed by TUKMC and provide care as a palliative physician. I am also continuing my work in provider wellness and wellbeing as the wellness champion for the Palliative Division at TUKMC. I have completed the first phase of my study on burnout in our palliative division and am about to convene a committee to work on interventions that may not only reduce burnout, but also help increase those things that help our division team member's well-being.
