owinblad@kumc.eduProfessional Background
Onalisa Winblad, M.D., is an Associate Professor of Radiology and Division Director of Breast Imaging at the University of Kansas Health System. She is an active leader within the University of Kansas NCI‑designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, serving on both the Breast Executive Committee and the Commission on Cancer committee.
Dr. Winblad earned her medical degree from the University of Kansas School of Medicine in 2008 and completed her Diagnostic Radiology residency at the University of Kansas Medical Center in 2013. She then pursued Breast Imaging fellowship training at Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology, Washington University School of Medicine, which she completed in 2014. She is board‑certified by the American Board of Radiology.
As a dedicated, fellowship trained breast radiologist, Dr. Winblad specializes in screening and diagnostic mammography, breast ultrasound, breast MRI, contrast-enhanced mammography, and image-guided breast procedures including breast biopsy, aspiration, and pre-operative localization.
Dr. Winblad is passionate about advancing early breast cancer detection for all women, particularly those with dense breast tissue and individuals at elevated risk for developing breast cancer. Her work focuses on developing personalized screening strategies that maximize the benefits of screening by matching each patient with the most appropriate imaging approach based on their individual risk factors and breast density. She is especially interested in understanding how early detection through screening not only reduces breast cancer mortality but also improves morbidity by enabling less invasive treatments and better long-term outcomes.
As a dedicated advocate for multidisciplinary breast care, Dr. Winblad works closely with breast specialists at the University of Kansas Cancer Center to ensure patients receive the right diagnosis, the right treatment, and coordinated, evidence-based care. She is also actively involved in the evaluation and management of high-risk breast lesions and is committed to helping patients navigate complex screening and treatment decisions with confidence. Her goal is to expand access to high-quality breast imaging, personalized risk assessment, and specialized breast care that supports the best possible outcomes for every patient.
