Professional Background

Nicole Fearing, M.D. F.A.C.S., F.A.S.M.B.S. is a Professor of Surgery in the Bariatric and Foregut Surgery division at the University of Kansas Medical Center. Originally from North Dakota, she attended the University of North Dakota for both her undergraduate degree and medical School. She completed her surgical residency at the University of Kansas-Wichita. After residency she completed a fellowship in Minimally Invasive and Bariatric Surgery at the University of Texas-Houston under Dr. Phillip Leggett. After completing her fellowship, she joined the University of Missouri-Columbia Department of Surgery where she was the Director of Laparoscopic Education. While there she also served as the Medical Director of the Shelden Clinical Simulation Center. She later brought her practice to Kansas City community for 15 years. During that time, she served for several years as the Medical Director of Simulation for the UMKC Clinical Training Facility. Dr Fearing was recruited to the University of Kansas Department of Surgery in 2026. She is very passionate about the treatment of obesity and the care of her patients. She has a clinical focus in primary and revisional bariatric surgery, as well as endoscopic techniques to care for bariatric patients. Dr. Fearing is involved nationally in SAGES and ASMBS. She regularly speaks and teaches for both organizations.
Dr Fearing is also an avid gardener and has started a garden at a local high school to help teach children of different abilities about cut flower gardening.
