Professional Background

Moben Mirza, MD, FACS, is a Professor and the Chair of the Department of Urology at The University of Kansas Health System. He is a urologic oncologist who grew up in California and New Mexico. He received his undergraduate degree at Northwestern University and completed medical school and residency at the University of New Mexico. After finishing his fellowship in urologic oncology at the University of Kansas, he had the distinct privilege of joining his mentors as a faculty member.

Dr. Mirza serves in many local and national leadership roles. He is the Chair of the Robotic Surgery Program and is a member of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Council at The University of Kansas Health System. Nationally, he is the Program Chair of the Society of Urologic Oncology, on the Executive Board of the Society of Academic Urologists, a committee member on the AUA Medical Student Committee and on the AUA Education Council. He is an examiner for the ABU and is a member of the SCS AUA Board, as well as the SCS AUA Resident and Fellow Committee.

Dr. Mirza treats his patients like family and is a strong advocate of patient education and shared decision-making. He specializes in the treatment of prostate, bladder, kidney, testicular, and penile cancers. He performs open, endoscopic, and robotic surgeries. Dr. Mirza has performed over two thousand robotic surgeries and is considered an expert and leader in robotic surgery. His research interests are in prostate, bladder and kidney cancers, as well as resident and medical student education.

Dr. Mirza is very engaged in community service, leadership, interfaith initiatives, mentorship, and volunteer efforts. He loves sports and is a fan of the Kansas City Chiefs and KU Jayhawks basketball. He plays on an intramural basketball team with the residents, who are the current defending champions at the medical center. He loves watching and playing cricket, enjoys cooking, grilling, and running. He has a beautiful wife who is very engaged in community work and has a passion for helping those most in need. Her non-profit organization, Breathe Hope, supports victims of domestic abuse. They have three awesome sons who keep them busy with their academic and extra-curricular activities.
