Mary C. Boyce, MD
Associate Professor, Wichita - Family & Community Medicine
mboyce@kumc.eduProfessional Background
Dr. Boyce enjoys the variety of her job - going back and forth from the office to hospital rounds to labor and delivery, and supporting residents through this tough “volume learning” phase of their career.
Dr. Boyce's original “hard choice” was choosing between Pediatrics and Family Medicine. She does not regret her choice, as she really enjoys seeing adolescents. She served for 12 years on the CARE team at Wesley doing evaluations of children with abuse and neglect concerns. While she does not miss testifying in court, she remains aware of the challenges facing many children in Wichita. She currently works with the YWCA Women’s Crisis Shelter as a Medical Advisor.
Dr. Boyce still cares for her own OB patients, and she tries to “share” those with a resident so they can have a continuity delivery. Just this last year, she delivered a baby to someone whom she delivered years ago! One of the obstetricians told her that she is now a “grandoc”!
Dr. Boyce feels at home at Wesley Medical Center, as she trained there as a medical student and resident. She thinks of herself as a co-learner and routinely learns new ways to manage patients. The last few years, as she has had exposure to more and more DO residents, she has begun to work on developing osteopathic skills. Very satisfying stuff! She is an introvert, and really recharges by spending time on her own, or with her partner. She has become a runner in her adulthood and has completed 4 marathons. She thinks half marathons are far more sensible!
She adapted her personal mission statement from a speech that Robert Kennedy gave when Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated. He quoted a Greek poet and called on people to “Make Gentle the Life of this World.” She feels we have the opportunity to do that every day for our patients and our staff and our residents, and she knows that our residents graduate and benefit their communities in so many ways.
