Dr. Matthew De Ruyter is an adult reconstruction surgeon who specializes in primary and revision total hip and knee arthroplasty. He treats a variety of conditions, including primary osteoarthritis, avascular necrosis, fractures, post-traumatic arthritis, instability, as well as performing revisions of prior surgeries.
Dr. De Ruyter grew up in Kansas City, attending Rockhurst High School and University of Oklahoma for undergraduate school. He received his doctorate of medicine from the University of Kansas School of Medicine before attending University of Missouri - Kansas City for his residency in orthopedic surgery. He then completed his Adult Reconstruction fellowship at the University of California - Davis. He was excited to return home to the University of Kansas Health System to begin his career in hip and knee replacements.
He has a special interest in outpatient joint surgery. He is helping develop the outpatient joint program at the University of Kansas Health System to help patients safely get to the comfort of their own home following surgery. He also is interested in using technology in surgery, utilizing robotic-assisted surgery and AI driven tools to help enhance surgical outcomes. He wants to continue to be on the forefront of technological advances within arthroplasty.
Dr. De Ruyter’s goal is to help patients live a life that is not limited by their hip or their knee. He is interested in getting patients back to the activities they enjoy, whether that is walks around the neighborhood or skiing in the mountains. He understands that these conditions can be debilitating towards a patient, and wants to help them achieve the quality of life that they desire.
In his free time, Dr. De Ruyter enjoys spending time with his dogs, trail running, snowboarding, exploring mountains, and watching football.
