Professional Background

Dr. Kamalakar Surineni is a board-certified psychiatrist (ABPN) and Clinical Assistant Professor. He serves as the attending supervisor for the KU Geriatric Psychiatry Services. He provides both inpatient and outpatient mental health care for older Kansans, including outpatient services to the VC-HOPE PACE® program.

Deeply committed to medical education, Dr. Surineni actively mentors psychiatry residents and medical students while championing expanded mental health outreach in underserved communities. He is widely published and serves as an investigator in multiple clinical trials focused on dementia and other psychiatric and medical conditions.

He also serves as the President-Elect of the Kansas Psychiatric Society and holds several key academic roles within the American Psychiatric Association (APA), including service on the Maintenance of Certification Committee (ABPN), Access to Care Committee, Nominations Committee, and Health Disparities Committee. Beyond his academic leadership, he contributes to healthcare policy as a member of the Kansas Drug Utilization Review Board (KDHE) and the Governor’s Aging Subcommittee (KDADS), where he helps advance initiatives that improve mental health services for older Kansans.

Dr. Surineni has a long-standing commitment to volunteerism, having served at The Kitchen Clinic in Springfield, MO, during his master's in public health, and at Duchesne Clinic in Kansas City, MO, while working at the Kansas City VA. Currently, he volunteers with the Disaster Mental Health Services (DMH) of the American Red Cross, providing free mental health consultations to disaster survivors across Kansas and Oklahoma region.
