Jo A. Wick, PhD

Professional Background

Dr. Jo Wick is Professor and Director of Graduate Education in the Department of Biostatistics & Data Science at the University of Kansas Medical Center (KUMC). She also serves as Co-Director of the PhD Program in Clinical and Translational Science and the MS Program in Clinical Research. Dr. Wick brings over two decades of experience in biostatistics, clinical trials, and health disparities research.

Dr. Wick’s methodological expertise spans Bayesian statistics, Bayesian adaptive designs, and pragmatic trial design. She has served as a biostatistician or co-investigator on numerous NIH- and NCI-funded studies across clinical and translational domains, including oncology, cardiology, infectious disease, and population health.

In addition to her research, Dr. Wick has made substantial contributions to graduate education and mentoring. As Director of Graduate Education since 2019, she has led curricular development, program accreditation efforts, and student support for MS and PhD programs in biostatistics and clinical research. She has received multiple teaching honors, including the Chancellor’s Distinguished Teaching Award (2023) and multiple departmental awards for excellence in teaching.

Nationally, Dr. Wick has served as Chair of the American Statistical Association’s Council of Chapters Governing Board, as a member of NIH study sections, and as a member of institutional advisory boards.

Dr. Wick earned her Ph.D. in Statistics from Baylor University in 2008. She has authored over 90 peer-reviewed publications and contributed to over $100 million in extramural research support. Her translational focus includes respiratory, cancer, and heart failure trials, and her commitment to advancing statistical education and diversity in science continues to shape academic and clinical research across disciplines.
