For more than 20 years, photographers have helped the University of Kansas Medical Center's Rural Health Education and Services (RHES) program showcase the people, places, and experiences that make rural Kansas unique. Through the Rural Kansas Photography Contest, amateur and professional photographers alike share compelling images that celebrate the beauty, character, and spirit of Kansas communities while helping promote rural Kansas to future healthcare professionals.

RHES is proud to partner with Kansas Country Living magazine for the eighth consecutive year. Since 1952, the publication has celebrated rural Kansas through stories, photography, and community connections. Today, with a circulation of more than 138,000, Kansas Country Living continues to showcase the people, places, and traditions that define life across the state. Through this partnership, the contest reaches audiences statewide while highlighting the stories, landscapes, and connections that make rural Kansas a great place to live, work, and play. 

Entries for the 2026 contest will be accepted September 21 through October 25, 2026. Finalists will be announced November 13, followed by public voting November 18–19. Winners will be announced November 23.

Photographers may submit images in the following 2026 categories:

• Hidden Gems of Kansas
• Sky's the Limit
• Healthcare in Kansas
• Seasons of Kansas
• Wildlife and Critters
• Youth Division (ages 13–17)

Cash prizes are awarded in each category, with first-place winners receiving $100 and second-place winners receiving $50. In addition, all entries are automatically eligible for the Kansas Country Living Grand Prize. The magazine's editorial team will select one photograph to receive a $100 award and a featured cover spot in the January 2027 issue. Additional photographs may also be selected for publication in the magazine.
