Medical Professional Liability Insurance Sponsorship
The Medical Professional Liability Insurance Sponsorship (Insurance Sponsorship) program was established by Rural Health Education and Services in 2013. The Insurance Sponsorship was created to assist University of Kansas Medical Center resident physicians and fellows (all campuses) with the cost of medical professional liability insurance so they can provide locum tenens to rural and urban underserved Kansas communities.
This sponsorship is a reimbursement sponsorship. Applicants must provide a copy of the receipt showing amount paid, and a copy of the certificate of insurance.

Selection Process

- Applicants must meet the Insurance Sponsorship Requirements outlined above.
- Communication to the applicant will be made to establish available coverage dates and determine if the applicant will be able to complete the required coverage hours.
- If funding is not currently available during the initial application, KLT may "hold" approval until funds are available. KLT providers may provide coverages during this time and those coverages will count toward the requirement.
Policy
- KLT will award resident physician/fellow Medical Professional Liability Insurance sponsorship based on Insurance Sponsorship Requirements outlined above and available funding.
- KLT will reimburse the resident/fellow the amount of the liability insurance, up to $1,400. Reimbursement is subject to taxes.
- Sponsorship recipients are required to complete at least 200 hours of service within a year through the KLT program. This generally equates to about four weekend coverages. All service hours must be completed within the insurance coverage period which has been sponsored.
- If the sponsorship recipient fails to provide the required KLT coverage hours during the sponsored coverage timeframe, the recipient will reimburse the KLT program on a pro-rated system based on the amount awarded for Insurance Sponsorship and the number of coverage hours not able to complete (example: Sponsorship award for $800. Recipient only covered 100 (half) of the required coverage hours. Recipient will be billed for $400).
- KLT reserves the right to decline an application.
- If a resident/fellow is denied insurance coverage, they are not eligible for liability insurance reimbursement sponsorship or the KLT program.
