Professional Background

Halinder Mangat, M.D., is an associate professor in the Department of Neurology and a neurocritical care specialist with The University of Kansas Health System. He joined KU Medical Center in 2021 after eight years on the faculty at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York. He is an adjunct Assistant professor at Weill Cornell Medical College, Adjunct Associate Professor at Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences, Bethesda, and is Director of Research for the Brain trauma Foundation. Dr. Mangat also serves as a permanent council member of the G4 Alliance.

Dual certified in internal medicine and neurology, Dr. Mangat spent two years as a research fellow in neurochemistry at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, and subsequently completed his fellowship in neurocritical care at Addenbrooke's Hospital/Cambridge University Hospitals, UK. He also earned a master's degree in public health for global practice from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

Dr. Mangat's interests are in global neurotrauma, especially in low-middle income countries. He has worked for nearly a decade in a capacity building program in Tanzania. Additionally, he dedicates research time in advanced clinical neurovascular physiology monitoring techniques using invasive devices such as cerebral microdialysis and cerebral oximetry to understand early brain injury in the acutely injured brain.
He is currently the PI on a Department of Defense funded multi center phase 1 clinical trial on safety of lumbar drainage in severe TBI, and is also funded as a subject matter and methodology liaison at the Military TBI Initiative - Brain Trauma Foundation center of excellence for Guidelines on TBI.
In addition, Dr. Mangat is part of the Global Coalition for TBI which is working towards tabling a resolution at the annual World Health Assembly meeting in 2026 to recognize TBI as a chronic and notifiable condition.
