Caring for Kansas: Rural Health Providers Scholarship Program

The Kansas Center for Rural Health, in collaboration with the Office of Continuing Education and Area Health Education Center, is happy to offer our continuing education scholarship program, Caring for Kansas.  

The program is designed to support non-MD/DO rural health professionals across Kansas by funding both virtual and in-person continuing education opportunities offered through AHEC/OCE. Scholarships will be awarded at a first come, first serve basis to those who meet the eligibility requirements and are intended to reduce financial barriers to professional development. Approved expenses are reimbursed following successful completion of the continuing education opportunity.   • Work as a non-DO/MD health professional 
    • Including but not limited to registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, social workers, pharmacist, therapists, dietitians, and laboratory technicians 
  • Work primarily in one of the 99 counties not classified as urban by KDHE 
    • Excluded counties: Johnson, Sedgewick, Wyandotte, Leavenworth, Shawnee, Douglas, Sedgwick 
    • Note that if an applicant lives in one of these counties but works primarily in an eligible county, they remain eligible for this program
  • In-person events must be held in the State of Kansas
  • The scholarship is for KUMC Area Health Education Center (AHEC) and the Office of Continuing Education (OCE) events only.
  • Virtual experiences: Registration and credits 
  • In-person experiences: Registration and credits, hotel, mileage, per diem
  • Apply a minimum of 21-days before the start of the continuing education program.
  • Be approved.
  • Register and pay for the program and hotel, as needed.
  • Complete the program. We require verification of attendance or course completion to reimburse expenses.
  • Return all required forms, receipts, and invoices within 21 days.
  • A check reimbursing you will be mailed to your home address. Approximately 30 days after paperwork is submitted. 
  • Completed W-9 form 
  • Completed Non-Employee Expense Reimbursement form 
  • Copy of your registration receipt
  • Event agenda
  • Verification of attendance or completion certificate for the approved continuing education activity.
  • If requesting reimbursement for mileage, hotel, and per diem.
    • Home address
    • Event address
    • A map showing your travel route (starting point anddestination)
    • Hotel invoices
      • Up to the University of Kansas reimbursable rate per the city traveled to. The dollar amount per night will be shared when accepted. Any amount over the approved room rate will be the grantee's responsibility.
    • Meal receipts
      • Meal expenses not provided by the conference or hotel are eligible for reimbursement.
      • Please note that alcohol is not reimbursable.
      • After travel, please submit an itemized receipt listing the specific items purchased. 

Submit an application at least two weeks prior to the continuing education event.
