Parent/Family Training

KU Medical Center Pediatrics believes education and training is important to the support of individuals with developmental disorders including autism spectrum disorder and Fragile X Syndrome.  We provide workshops and training to teach skills that are evidence-based in order to improve outcomes for individuals with developmental disorders.

Children, adolescents and young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities often require more medical, mental health, educational and family support services than their same age peers. Many parents report that it is hard to find and coordinate adequate services for their children.

Family Resource Specialists partner with families to identify the needs of the child and family to link them to information and resources.

The family support specialist will talk with the family to identify their needs and develop a care coordination plan. The Care Coordination plan will help the family access resources in their communities such as government supports, therapists, behaviorists, and future needs.

Kansas LEND Family Education Series

Kansas LEND offers monthly sessions (excluding July and December) on topics that are relevant to every day lives in the families of those with intellectual and developmental disabilities across the lifespan.

Sessions are in the evening, virtual, and archived on the Kansas LEND YouTube page. Topics have ranged from marriage, employment, self-advocacy to self-care and siblings.

Our Next Kansas LEND Family Education Session:

Small Skills, Big Impact: School Readiness with Applied Behavior Analysis with Molly Noon, MA, L/BCBA, CCC-SLP and Jamie Leeson, MA-AS with Integrated Behavioral Technologies, Inc. (IBT) will be on Thursday, August 13th from 4-5pm.

This hour-long session gets both you and your child ready for school: practical school readiness skills for your child, and navigating your school team for you. We'll teach skills like opening food packages, managing clothing and fasteners, and sitting near peers without wandering. These skills free your child to be available for academics, rather than requiring the teacher's time and attention on small self-help tasks. We'll walk through how to teach them at home step by step. We'll also cover how to navigate your school team, including who to contact if you want to explore special education services or general education support.

Register for an upcoming session.
