Hayley Rogowski, D.O.

About Me

I completed medical school at the Kansas City University College of Osteopathic Medicine and my Family Medicine Residency at the University of Missouri – Kansas City.  I enjoy spending time with my family, reading, and crafting. In the summer I enjoy going to the lake and playing sand volleyball. You’ll find me at every home football game for the Kansas State Wildcats. 

Why did you decide to pursue a fellowship in Geriatric Medicine?

I was blessed to grow up with a lot of older adults in my life including my grandparents, great-grandparents, and great aunts and uncles. As I watched them age and navigate the health system, I saw some of the challenges they faced. I’m interested in geriatrics to better care for older adults and be the physician I would want for my family members.

In your opinion, what makes older adult patients special or unique?

Older adults have lived so much life prior to seeing you in the hospital or clinic that has shaped their views of healthcare. What they have experienced or have seen their loved ones experience shapes how they think about their health and goals.

What advice would you give to a medical student, resident or career physician who is interested in a future in Geriatric Medicine?

It is okay to slow down and get to know your patients. You can learn a lot from a patient’s stories like what is important to them that we can focus on when making decisions about their health.

About Me

I completed medical school and my Family Medicine Residency at the University of Missouri – Kansas City.  My interests include spending time with loved ones; especially cooking and trying new foods together. I also enjoy practicing yoga, playing piano and traveling. 

Why did you decide to pursue a fellowship in Geriatric Medicine?

Learning from physician mentors trained in Geriatrics during medical school and residency inspired my passion for caring for this population. I am drawn to this specialty's holistic, patient-centered approach to care, which emphasizes aligning evidence-based care with each patient's goals and values, while navigating the complexities of aging. I hope to provide compassionate care that reflects what matters most to older adults and gives back to the generations that came before us.

In your opinion, what makes older adults special or unique?

Older adult patients may have multiple complexities with their health, which requires careful evaluation. I value taking the time to listen to older patients, as understanding the complexity of their lives can provide invaluable insight into what matters most to them. Working together with patients and their families to align medical care decisions with those priorities is one of the most meaningful aspects of geriatric care to me.

What advice would you give to a medical student, resident or career physician who is interested in a future in Geriatric Medicine?

Pursue experiences in caring for older adults, such as volunteering at a nursing home or scheduling elective rotations in Geriatrics. A half day of Geriatrics clinic during medical school while on my Family Medicine rotation was enough to open my eyes to the care I could provide for this special population of patients and further explore my interest in this career. This is an easily overlooked but highly rewarding specialty!
