Medical, Dental and Vision Insurance

Benefit-eligible employees at the University of Kansas Medical Center may explore a variety of benefits, including medical, dental, and vision insurance, as well as various tax savings account options (health savings accounts, health reimbursement account and/or flexible spending account) offered through the State of Kansas Employee Health Plan (SEHP). Eligible employees may choose medical coverage through one of two preferred providers: Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Kansas or Aetna.

Eligible employees of the University of Kansas may choose from our two preferred provider plans: Blue Cross or Aetna.

Cost of Medical Coverage

As an active, benefits-eligible employee, KUMC covers most of the monthly premium. The employee portion of the premium is deducted twice per month from an employee’s paycheck on either a pre-tax or after-tax basis. Premium amounts are based on employment status (full- or part-time status) and the elected health plan.

A medical premium discount is available to employees that participate in the HealthQuest Health & Wellness Program (more information can be found below).

Full-time benefits-eligible employees have different premium rates than part-time benefits-eligible employees. For individuals working more than one part-time position, benefits eligibility and premium costs are determined by the combined full-time equivalent (FTE) of all benefits‑eligible positions.

For part-time employees who have more than one position: your benefits eligibility status and what you pay will be based on the combined full-time equivalent (FTE) for all benefits-eligible positions. Full-time benefits-eligible employees pay less than part-time benefits-eligible.

  • Full-time = 75 to 100% FTE (full-time equivalency)
  • Part-time = 48 to 74% FTE (full-time equivalency)

HealthQuest Wellness Program

By participating in our employee HealthQuest Wellness Program, employees may be eligible to reduce their health insurance premium costs by $480 annually—equivalent to a $20 savings per paycheck when health deductions apply.

In addition, an employee can earn $12.50 per point, up to a maximum of 40 points, deposited into a health savings account (HSA) or health reimbursement account (HRA). This allows an employee to earn up to $500 per year in HSA/HRA reward dollars.

Health Savings Account

A health savings account (HSA) allows employees to set aside pre‑tax dollars to help pay for eligible health care expenses for yourself, your spouse, and/or your dependent children. Both the employee and your employer can contribute to the account. Funds contributed into an HSA are yours to keep and do not expire at the end of the plan year. For more information about a health savings account, please visit: SEHP Health Savings Account (HSA).

Health Reimbursement Account

A health reimbursement account (HRA) is an employer‑funded account designed to help pay for eligible health care expenses for yourself, your spouse, and/or your dependent children. Only the employer may contribute to an HRA. Funds in an HRA are subject to a “use it or lose it” rule—any unused balance at the end of the calendar year is forfeited. For more information about the health reimbursement account, please visit: SEHP Health Reimbursement Account (HRA).

Flexible Spending Accounts

A flexible spending account (FSA) allows employees to set aside pre‑tax funds to pay for anticipated eligible out‑of‑pocket health care expenses, dependent care expenses, or commuter and parking costs. FSA accounts are funded solely by employee contributions.

The University offers four types of FSAs:

  • Health Care FSA: Available to members enrolled in Health Plan A. Used for qualifying medical, dental and vision expenses.
  • Limited Purpose FSA: Available to members enrolled in Health Plan C or N. Used for qualifying dental and vision expenses only.
  • Dependent Care FSA: Available regardless of health plan enrollment. Used for qualifying childcare expenses.
  • Commuter/Parking FSA: Available regardless of health plan enrollment. KUMC campus parking is not considered an eligible expense under the commuter/parking FSA.

For more information about flexible spending accounts, please visit:  SEHP Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA).
