Searching Our Discovery Service: Getting Started

Our discovery service is a good place to start searching for items in our print collection. We recommend you use our Publication Finder if you’re looking for a specific online publication or the Full Text Finder if you have a specific citation (particularly DOI or PMID).

  • Type the title of the print, electronic book or journal in the Quick Search box on the main library page. You can also search by Author, Subject, or ISBN/ISSN using the Advanced search option. (You can also search by article title. However, we recommend using Full Text Finder when searching for a specific article/citation.)
  • Click the magnifying glass to view your results.
  • Use the filter box underneath the search box on the results page to limit your search if necessary. You can filter by Library, Collection, Format, Date, and more.
    • For example, if you click and Apply Dykes Ground Floor Books in the All Filters submenu Location, the All Filters box will indicate that a filter has been applied and your results will now only show items from the Dykes Library.
    • To remove a single filter, click All Filters box, uncheck the filter then click Apply.
  • If you'd like to learn more about the discovery service, check out the EBSCO video tutorial.
  • Remember, if you can't find what you're looking for at our library, order it through Interlibrary Loan!

Searching for a Book or Journal in Print

  • The best interface for hard copy print materials is our Locate service.  You can search by Author, Subject, or ISBN/ISSN on the Locate home page.  The Advanced search page offers extra fields for easier boolean (AND, OR, NOT) searching, as well as dropdown limiters.
  • After applying filters (if needed), find your book or journal title listed in your results. Note the location, the items availability and call number. Click on the title to open the record for additional holdings information.
  • Visit the User Services desk for help retrieving the item, or to check it out.

Searching for an Electronic Book or Electronic Journal

  • We recommend you use our Publication Finder if you’re looking for online content.
  • You can search by ISSN, ISBN, title, author, publisher and other fields.
  • You can also limit to searching specifically for e-journals or e-books.
  • Follow the Full Text Access links to connect to the electronic text. Note: For e-journals, be sure to note the holdings record. Our online access is only for the years specifically noted. Click on the title to open the record for additional publication information.
  • No need to check out e-books or e-journals but please call the User Services desk at (913) 588-7166 or submit an E-Journal Problem Report if you have any trouble accessing these materials.
  • To learn more about the Publication Finder interface, view this video from EBSCO.

Searching for an Article

  • If you are looking for a specific article and have the title, a Digital Object Identifier (DOI) or PubMed ID (PMID), visit our Full Text Finder page, enter the information in its specific field, and Click submit.  The Full Text Finder will return results and provide a link to full text access or a link to our Interlibrary Loan service.
  • For general database searching:
    • Visit our Database How-To Guide.
    • Select a database.
    • Use the FindIt! Button to search our collection directly from the database.
  • Can't find what you are looking for in our collection? Request the item from Interlibrary Loan!

Additional Discovery Service Features

  • Access additional search options by clicking Advanced search to the right of the Quick Search box.
  • Select several records in the results list using the check boxes, then one of the icons at the top of the page to add the records to a project folder, cite them, or download them. You can also email, save a permalink or export individual book or journal records to a cloud service by using the Share link in the individual item records.
  • Get help with citing sources by clicking the Cite link (an upturned quotation mark) in the individual item record.
