The Office of Graduate Studies maintains the official list of GTA/GRA positions. Each semester a new list is prepared that includes the student's name, KUID, department, appointment type and percent (FTE) for the appointment. This list is sent to the Registrar's Office, Student Financial Aid, Student Financial Accounting, and the Office of International Programs so they can apply appropriate tuition waivers to student accounts based on appointment type and FTE. Enrollment Definitions for Graduate Students
The University policy for defining full and half-time enrollment status for graduate students is in the Academic Catalog. International Students should also contact the Office of International Programs to verify enrollment requirements.

Request for GTA/GRA to Reduce Hours

GTAs/GRAs who meet certain qualifications may, with approval from Graduate Studies, enroll in fewer than the minimum required hours for one or more semesters.  Staff can submit requests for approval through the Progress to Degree database on behalf of each eligible student.

• PhD students appointed as a GTA/GRA may be eligible for reduced enrollment when they have completed 18 credit hours after a successful oral comprehensive exam. 
• Clinical doctoral students appointed as a GTA/GRA may be eligible for reduced enrollment when insufficient credit hours remain in their program to meet GTA/GRA minima. Approval will not be granted for a subsequent semester if the student does not complete the degree the semester enrollment in fewer hours is granted.
• Master's students appointed as a GTA/GRA may be eligible for reduced enrollment when insufficient credit hours remain in their program to meet GTA/GRA minima. Approval will not be granted for a subsequent semester if the student does not complete the degree the semester enrollment in fewer hours is granted.

Health Insurance Benefit for GTA/GRA
A GTA/GRA with 50% FTE is eligible to participate in a health care benefits plan, underwritten by United Healthcare, for which KUMC provides a contribution. The KUMC Student Health Insurance Office works directly with students regarding health insurance options.  Contact information for this office and related links to United Healthcare can be found on their web page.

Department GTA/GRA/GA Submissions 
Departments that hire GTAs, GRAs, and GAs will submit their hires in the Grad Studies Database every semester.  Staff and faculty should contact gradstudiesoffice@kumc.edu to request access to the database.
