Alexander Brown, M.D., and Logan Clay, M.D., third-year residents in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, co-presented at the American Association of Directors of Psychiatric Residency Training’s annual meeting in Orlando, Florida.

Brown and Clay’s poster presentation, “Increasing Psychiatry and Psychology Interprofessional Collaboration and Bettering Patient Care Using A Structured Pairing Program During Training,” focused on a partnership formed by the department’s residency program and psychology doctoral internship program. By pairing third-year psychiatry residents with psychology interns for direct patient referrals for psychotherapy, Brown and Clay found that the shared patients increased collaboration across programs.

Angela Mayorga, M.D., professor and residency program director, and Daniel Ortiz, M.D., clinical assistant professor, mentored the residents as they developed their presentation.

"Working on this project was a fun way to work on quality improvement,” Clay said. “I felt really lucky to be able to attend this conference with our mentors, hear from other residency programs and learn about ways to further improve our own residency program."

Now in its 53rd year, the association’s annual meeting brings together colleagues from across the country to build community and advance psychiatric residency training. KU had a nice showing this year, as faculty from KU School of Medicine-Wichita also presented during workshop sessions.
