Angela Mayorga, M.D., professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, is one of five recipients of the 2026 Ruth Bohan Teaching Professorship from the University of Kansas School of Medicine, awarded during the School of Medicine's annual Faculty Retreat on Friday, Aug. 28. 

"Dr. Mayorga is a transformational, compassionate and inspiring educator,” Dianne Durham, Ph.D., senior associate dean for faculty affairs for the School of Medicine, said at the retreat. “Her mentorship does not end when the day is over, and she’s an educator who embodies what we ask of ourselves and our students.”  

The award, given annually, provides $5,000 to a School of Medicine faculty member who demonstrates excellence in the teaching of medical students, graduate students, residents and/or fellows. The award was established by Ruth Harris Bohan, a distinguished artist who, alongside her husband and School of Medicine Professor Peter T. Bohan, M.D., supported the medical school's educational mission through various trusts and scholarships. 

Mayorga joined the department faculty in 2007. A former trainee in the department's internal medicine/psychiatry residency program, Mayorga now serves as vice chair for the department and director of the psychiatry residency program. 

"I'm honored to receive this award," Mayorga said. "I love my job as program director, which affords me the opportunity to teach and create new learning opportunities for residents that help them become the best psychiatrists they can be."
