Student Engagement
Going beyond learning what it takes to be an audiologist or speech-language pathologist, KU students are involved in advocacy and creating awareness about the importance of services to be made available to our residents. Find out more about how our students engage in these activities to further their learning outside the classroom and make an impact in the field.
Advocacy, Awareness and Action
Legislative Day
Students from our programs attend Legislative Day at the state capitol in Topeka, Kansas.

National Advocacy
In 2019, two graduates of KU's doctorate program in audiology visited Capitol Hill March 4 as part of the American-Speech-Language-Hearing Association's Audiology Advisory Council.
Department of Hearing and Speech faculty member Cole Campbell, Au.D., CCC-A, was joined by Goldie Pappan-Hall, Au.D., CCC-A, clinical audiologist from Alaska, in advocating for association priorities such as funding for early hearing detection intervention and enhancing Medicare access to audiology services.
As vice chair of the council, Campbell also met with elected representatives from Kansas while in Washington, D.C.
Student Organizations
A large number of opportunities exist for students to become involved in school and campus-wide student groups. These are great ways to meet new people, learn about other health care careers and obtain leadership experience for your resume.
- Student Academy of Audiology
- Advancement for Minoritized Students in Communication Sciences and Disorders promotes the understanding of the communication needs of the culturally and linguistically diverse population in the communities served by speech-language pathologists, audiologists and other related health care professionals. The organization aims to support speech-language pathology and audiology students in their academic experiences and empower them through mentorship and resources.
