How to Prepare for Your Visit

Preparing ahead of time ensures your imaging session can begin smoothly. Please review the information below carefully before your visit.

  • The imaging center can be difficult to locate on campus.
  • Please review the directions and map ahead of time.
  • Plan to arrive at the facility at least 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment to allow time for check-in and changing.

🕒 Arriving on Your Own

  • Some studies allow participants to arrive without immediately meeting a study team member.
  • Clear signage and staff at the imaging center will help guide you through check-in and changing into scrubs.
  • If you are unsure where to go, ask front-desk staff for assistance.

📝 Required Forms

  • Bring your completed participant check-in form with you. This may be physical paper or an email or a text provided by your study contact.
  • The form may be provided as a paper copy, email, or text attachment.
  • This form is required to begin your visit.
  • If you do not have the form or have questions about it, contact your study team before your appointment.

👕 What to Wear (Required)

  • You must change into provided scrubs before your scan.
  • Personal clothing cannot be worn during imaging, even if it does not contain metal.
  • Wear clothing that is easy to change out of.
  • Lockers are available for storing personal belongings.
  • Participants who do not change into scrubs will not be scanned.

🧴 Personal Items

  • Leave jewelry, watches, hair accessories, piercings, and other metal items at home if possible.
  • Bring only essential personal items.
  • Storage is available during your visit, but space is limited.

☕ Food, Drink & Medications

  • Follow any study-specific instructions provided by your study team.
  • If no restrictions were given, you may eat, drink, and take medications as you normally would.

If you are unsure about any part of the preparation process, please contact your study team before arriving for your appointment. We’ve provided a list of frequently asked questions and tips for our visitors below.

The HBIC is located on the University of Kansas Medical Center Campus at 39th Street and Rainbow Boulevard in Kansas City, Kansas. The center is a one-story building just west of the Hemenway Life Sciences Building. Our general mailing address is 3901 Rainbow Boulevard, MS 1052, and Kansas City, KS 66160.

Map and Parking Info

HBIC is part of the University of Kansas Medical Center. Although closely connected, the University of Kansas Hospital Authority is a separate legal entity from the university.

Please contact the study coordinator for the study that you will be participating in. For general inquiries about an existing appointment, please contact our HBIC front desk office at 913-588-9070.

All visitors who are participating in a research study should park in the P4 garage, using the intercom to request entry. Take the elevator located in the southwest corner of the garage to the 5th floor and then cross the bridge before turning right (west) towards our building.

Yes, we do. 

  • You will be provided with required hearing protection during your MRI.
  • What to wear:
    • All persons being scanned in the MRI must change into provided scrubs
    • Nothing should be worn above the neck area. This includes anything on the head, including artificial hair, wigs, hats, scarves, etc.
    • All jewelry and piercings must be removed
    • Wear as little makeup as possible; none on or around your eyes as it may interfere with the study.
    • Hair should be worn down, no buns or ponytails
    • If you have removable dental work, you will be asked to remove it before scanning
    • If you require glasses, please be sure to bring your prescription or wear contacts
  • Most scans will last an hour or more and will require you to lie flat on your back.
  • Medical history:
    • You will be required to fill out a safety screening form prior to your scan to ensure that it is safe for you to participate in the study you are volunteering for
    • Those under 18 will need a parent or legal guardian.
    • Certain implants will require documentation to verify safety. If you have been given an implant card, please bring it with you the day of the scan. Otherwise inform the researcher so that we may try to find any necessary documentation. If you have ever had an injury involving metal to your eyes or skin, a radiology report will be required to demonstrate that no foreign bodies are present.
    • Those who wear medication patches or insulin pumps will be asked to remove them prior to having an MRI. Please verify with your prescribing physician that it is safe to do so.
  • Young children are not permitted to be left unattended.
  • Friends and family of those being scanned will be asked to remain in the waiting area while scanning is taking place.
